An Apple From Tartarus

Like the apple bough
taunting Tantalus
you stand inches
from me.
Like the hunger
Tantalus felt upon
seeing the apples
the desire to touch
your flesh festers.
Like the apples of Tartarus,
you retreat, leaving
longing unappeased.
