Intimate Stranger
By Fred E. Beaulieu
She watches as he’s sleeping
While reclining by his side
He seems to her a stranger
Hiding thoughts he won’t confide
She wonders what he’s dreaming
As his lips betray a smile
She feels he feigns contentment
Guarding secrets all the while
Her fragile heart is troubled
Fighting fears she can’t allay
Yet holding out the forlorn hope
That love will find a way
She watches as he’s sleeping
In the stillness of the night
She longs to draw him near to her
And hold his body tight
Where once he was transparent
Now he’s distant and withdrawn
There was a time she knew him well
But now those days are gone
She listens to his breathing
And the ticking of the clock
The door that guards his private thoughts
Is one she can’t unlock
He may as well be absent now,
A thousand miles away
The chasm in his heart is one
She tries to bridge each day
She watches as he’s sleeping
And she knows she’s still in love
But wonders if she’ll ever be
The one he’s dreaming of
