A GEEK ROMANCE

a day hike filled with
skipping flattened snowballs
across reflected skies
of sierra mountain lakes
— and pining for wildflowers

he is
infatuated
with her braininess
and indie music cred
while she
acts unimpressed
at his oblique strategies

the trance of an evening out
walking to a midtown eatery
and holding hands
— for the first time

witty comebacks
and shared mockery
of wine snobbery
then asking if they have red Zin
— yes
. . . but is it old vine?

a late night race
through an unlocked park gate
to take the first ride
on the lone chair
of a children’s swing

later the awkward silence
in the space between them
alone on the couch
before he moves over
gently kissing the beauty
of her ear lobes
and soft porcelain neck
to her whisper of
. . . this could work

inspired to take off all his clothes
he reveals the hard
nakedness of his body
. . . because it worked before

the tender request from her
that he put them back on
yet not losing the moment
leading him by the hand
to bed that night

and in the morning
consummating breakfast
the grace of manners
always being
what they hold onto
with the hope of love
