Paper Heart
By Walter William Safar

Like a French chansonnier in love,
The wind sings a sad ballad
To the blue night,
About two leaves in love
He set apart in fall,
And about the paper heart in my hands,
That so sadly flutters
Under the burden of a mute tear.

While the sad wind whispers
To the blue night
About its thousand days of silence and hermitage,
I am caressing the paper heart
With the inexplicable hope
That I shall hear the echo of her heart
In this blue night,

Yes, Lord, now I know,
This blue night became a wonderful home
To many a heart,
This night that so tenderly loves
Like a big blue heart,
That beats so timidly and equally for all people.
In this blue night, everything comes to life,
And the paper heart,
And those two leaves in love,
Which the wind joined again.

The paper heart is tenderly fluttering now,
As if it was alive,
As if the wind brought it
From its tender chest
Into this blue night.

It is wonderful when your blood
So lively flows through you veins,
And even more wonderful
When your heart beats so lively in your silent chest,
Which has not heard the music of love for so long.

The paper heart is fluttering in my hands,
Born by her tender hand
And put onto my palm
When she left
Into the blue night.
