My Light
By Linda M. Crate

you drain me
like a vampire sucking
every last drop of
blood from the body of
his victim, except you
don’t disappear;
you remain here with me —
yet as draining as you are I
would not exchange you
for anyone else in the world,
you let me be weak when
I’m too proud to admit that I
cannot be strong, you let
me believe I’m beautiful when
I look like some horrid
creature from a Stephen King novel —
you are my beacon shining through
the darkness, cutting away all
the night of my life with
the light of your love; you accept
the worst and the best of me,
and together we spin webs
that the spiders envy;
because our love is higher
than every mountain and deepest
of all the seas waving their
harshest tempests.
