Distance
By Geeta

The distance is hard on me.
I am the sea, and you are the moon, and my tides can’t come any nearer.
I was a fool to kiss that unworthy.
But I am a mere mortal,
And our love is divine.
You forgave me and my tears ran
like the sea.
Reaching towards the forgiveness of your moon.
Getting no closer over time,
Like I had hoped they would,

The distance is hard on me.
The dark blues of my seas threaten to drown me,
And the vacuum in space means you can’t hear me
From up there on the moon.

The distance is hard on me.
Not being able to hold you and kiss you
And tell you about my desperate need to burrow into the small of your back
Is as hard as asking me to walk on water.
Or build a ladder to the moon.

The distance is hard on me.
People have been apart
Across many more seas and for many moons more
Than you and I.
They laugh.
To them, our distance is insignificant.
But to me, my love.

The distance is hard on me.
And every day gets harder.
But I know,
At the end of the world,
The moon and the sea will be together once more.
And you and I may not live to see it,
but we would have lived just the same.

The distance is hard on me.
But you are worth the pain.
And some day, we’ll watch
The moon sink into a watery horizon
Together.
