Bound
By Wendy L. Schmidt

My heart is failing,
Tired and torn,
Twisted and turned,
Abnormal rhythm, frail, fluttering,
Falling far away,
From a lover’s caress.

Desperate yearning,
Wounded need,
Unawake to wanton ways,
Cruel hunter’s ruthless pursuit,
Aimed to capture,
The fresh, fragile dove.

Tempting romantic ideals,
Seductive snare,
A fleet screaming bullet,
Swift and straight to my breast,
One more idle shot,
Through bent and broken wing,
.
Blinding, radiant descent,
Harrowing velocity,
Violent, vertigo,
Daring to take the plunge,
One more fearless dive,
One more lost Eden.

Is hope the catalyst,
Love’s clever ruse,
Last refuge for the lorn?
Take away this needy lie,
I can’t expose my heart again,
I can’t stop it from beating,

Bound by a fateful plan,
Like a mother’s promise,
Knowing her precious fledgling,
Will grow and take flight,
While in her careful keep,
She gives all she possesses,

Her patience, her love,
Her life if necessary,
Until at long last,
Spent and silent,
She is finally left,
With an empty embrace.
