Paper Heart
By Zara Lone

paper thin and paper weak
like a flimsy arts project crafted by a six year old child
for valentine’s day
begging,
"be mine" in the center with pink crayolas
and tiny hearts fluttering on the outside edges,
fractured right down the middle
and fixed up with a band-aid
some Elmer’s glue, the purple kind
that stains if its not applied correctly
dropped to the floor
and picked up by the wrong hands
time and time again
torn, burned, kicked, and crumbled,
vandalized and for just a second,
loved.
by every new soul who can see its flawed beauty
and who can admire it’s relentless warmth
its soft glow and simple paper form
for every new soul that needs love
loves my paper heart
until they grow tired and weary
of constant love
and constant warmth
and nothing to challenge them with
they leave it be
all alone to dry in the sun
these subtle tears of mine,
form tiny dark spots on the paper heart
one, two, three, and four,
I leave it be
and my paper heart is once again,
forgotten.
