Ace
By Laura Maddox
Reds and yellows memorize,
As I watch your fire rise,
I see anger in your eyes.
On this night in late September
Every second I hear a timber,
broken down with fires ember.
Think of memories to erase.
I can’t believe I ran this race
but it’s a test I’ll have to ace.
My heart will have to sharpen,
I’ll let rage out with ink and pen.
Why did I ever let you in?
When you proposed with that stone,
I should’ve known by your tone
You only wanted me to own.
Love is not a purchase,
Or a never ending chase,
You treat me like a jack while I should be an Ace.
