Love Is Moments, Not Necessarily Ours
By John Grey
Suddenly,
I spy the most beautiful girl in town -
I can’t help staring -
Joanna is jealous -
she wants to cut out the heart of all loveliness -
She believes love
should be able to walk
back and forth
in front of Grundy’s hardware store
a thousand times without once
allowing the wind that blows
up from the alleys,
out of the forest,
to get into her sails -
She believes love
should be heavy enough
to keep things here -
I will marry Joanna
because she is composed of years not seconds -
but the most beautiful girl in town -
she blows by in a Red Corvette,
blue eyes, a slither of yellow hair -
she drives off into
the deepest part of my heart
and is never seen again -
