Our Weekends
By Jerry Halifax
When the weekend starts, I always find myself in your arms. When the weekend starts, and the phone rings, I always hear your mother asking, voice still quivering after all this time:
“Is Jeff there?”
Even your response hangs unchanging:
“Yes he is, mother.” You look at me, that smile, that playful grin I love. “Would you like to talk to him?”
And then, that soft, sudden pause, like the expected silence between rhythms in a favorite song.
“No, that’s okay, dear.” She says. “I won’t keep you. You boys enjoy your weekend.”
I smile. We’re in love.
We can’t help but enjoy our weekends together.
