Pronouns
by Lena Judith Drake
I fold ragged towels, washcloths with finger holes,
and fading, bleached cartoon faces,
place them in the empty spaces
in the hallway shelves.
I remember you singing in front of me,
not changing the lyrics from she to he like I always have,
except as much as I stared, you wouldn't look at me.
I match corner to corner on the cloth, displaced threads
and sing your song under my breath,
not changing the lyrics
for once, because I'm singing about you
(she once was a true love of mine)
